Utopia Series
Alive in the Mind Exhibition, Walcot Chapel
A body of work in response to De Stijls notion of 'Utopia' and their belief that a 'New Utopian Ideal' could be achieved through their abstract, geometric work.
This piece is responding to the idea that utopia is simplicity, order and balance, and therefore dystopia is complexity, disorder and imbalance. It aims to question these statements, and through doing so, question the very notion of a 'Utopian Ideal'.
The significance of the petri-dish is to fortify the idea of a cultivated and controlled ideal, an unobtainable dream.
